Getting our House Painted This Week

We've been in our home since late 2002, and we've lived with off-white walls throughout, until now.  Partially because it was starting to look beat up (kids can do that) and partially because we were simply tired of the lack of color, we decided to just move forward and pick out some colors and have it painted through most of the interior.

Now that our bathroom and part of our family room have been painted, my only regret is that we didn't do it sooner.  Even though we have several days left before they finish, our house already feels nicer and, frankly, more expensive.  I have a good friend who is a painter, so we're getting a "deal" there.  However, now that I see the results, I would have gladly paid full price to feel this much better about the place where we live.

There are a couple of points/lessons that I learned already:

  • Using colors when painting makes a huge difference in how nice the home seems
  • Paint is a relatively small investment to change your environment and the accompanying satisfaction that it brings

I've told clients about this for years now, but until this week, I guess it was just because I always saw it on shows like "Trading Spaces" and "Clean House".  I like the fact that I can speak with experience now.

I also learned another lesson, although I guess I already knew this: I don't want to be a painter.  The same goes for roofing.  I watched a guy painting my family room tonight, where we have 22-foot ceilings.  He was standing on a (very) long extension ladder.  I'm not overly afraid of heights, but that would have wigged me out to be up there.

After the work is finished, I might post some photos here, unless I get lazy or forgetful.  Kids can cause that, too.  ;)
