My Father's Day

I almost didn't write this particular post at all, since I have seen so many great ones today on the topic of fatherhood, but I did have a few thoughts I wanted to share about my day.  Nothing earth-shattering here, but you might find it interesting.

Today was not all that different than any other Sunday for me.  We went to church, where Brandon and Aleah helped me with greeting duties.  Brandon is probably the best greeter in the church, and I am not at all biased. :)

After church, we went to eat Greek food, which turned out to be a bit of a tragedy, if I'm being honest.  The service was truly bad (future post material), and Abby (our two-year old) was highly upset and grumpy and tired throughout the meal.

One of the best gifts that I received today was a post-lunch nap for a couple of hours.  When I was a kid, I never napped after I was about a year old.  It seemed tantamount to torture in my mind.  I tried to go to a day camp once wherein they attempted to get us to lie down for an hour.  They only could have accomplished this by using duct tape on me.  I had zero interest in being still.  It strikes me as the ultimate irony that naps are one of my favorite pleasures now.  I don't know if this is true for all dads, but it is a treat for me.

After getting up, I helped clean up the house because we have a church small group that meets here every Sunday evening.  We had a nice visit (and some great food) with our friends.

Gifts from my children today:

  • Aleah - A lovely fishbowl painting that she created with colorful fish - she made a point to retrieve it from my wife's car this morning.  She is very thoughtful and sweet.
  • Abby - She seemed reluctant to hug me or to say "Happy Father's Day" for the first half of the day.  After her nap (and mine), she cuddled with me for awhile in the bed and said, "Happy Daddy Day".  No better gift than that.
  • Brandon - A Dum-Dum wrapper from a lollipop.  Yes, really.  He is an eternal joker, and he asked me several times with a gleam in his eye, "Did you like my present?".  As if I could say "No"!  Funny child.

Thanks for reading about my day!  I hope all of you dads had a terrific day.

Maybe you even got a nap, too.
