My daughter's 7th birthday party was today

Today, we had a great birthday party at our home for our daughter, Aleah, who turned seven a few days ago.  Over time, I have come to realize that it is not about the expense of the party itself.  Instead, it's about the birthday kid feeling special and loved and being the center of attention for the day.

As with my other daughter, who is two, Aleah has me wrapped around her little finger, and I was hoping that this would be a wonderful day for her.  I was not disappointed.

Friday is "maid day" at our house, which is why it's also the best day for a party.  We arose early in order to get the rooms picked up before the maids came (this has always struck me as a little odd, but necessary if we want things to look really good).

After the maids came, I took Aleah to the grocery store so that we could pick up the most important party items, such as balloons, ice, cake, etc.  We had a fun trip.  Interestingly, the guy who is responsible for inflating the balloons at the store is much like the redneck neighbor from "Office Space" ("Dude, check out channel seven!"), so it struck me as humorous that this was his job.

The more humorous part was that he took great pains to make the ribbons look curly and nice.  If you haven't seen the movie, sorry for the reference.  If you have, you are probably laughing right now.

So, everyone arrived between 2:30 and 2:45 or so.  There was one family that we also really wanted to see, and they weren't here by 3:00, so Pam called them.  They have one car currently, and the other backup car was in use, so I went to pick up the whole family (dad was at work), since they live VERY close.  We actually met them through ActiveRain, believe it or not, and we have a lot in common, since they are Christian homeschoolers with three kids exactly the same age as our kiddos.

The party went smoothly, and Aleah received a large bounty of presents, especially since she got a new bike from my mother-in-law, and probably seven gifts from my mom.  The cake was awesome, with strawberry filling.  Aleah told me at the store that it was "a princess cake, with a tiara and a scepter".  Appropriate enough.  She did get a chance to actually wear the tiara while we were eating cake, so that was cool.

The girls did a craft project with Perler beads, and the boys played some tag and soccer outside, and video games inside.  We only invited four families (all of them came), but there were 17 kids in attendance.

Thanks for reading about our great family day!  It looks like this evening will be spent trying out her new bike (I should probably say "their new bikes", since my son got one, too).
