Don't You (Forget About Me) - A Real Estate Lesson from 1985

When I was about 15, I saw Simple Minds in concert in Dallas at the now-defunct Bronco Bowl with my good friend Philip Sewell. This was a relatively small venue and from what I understand, a Home Depot now stands in that spot. That is a sad commentary to me, but it is what it is. I think this was the second concert that I ever attended.

The opening band was The Call, which I later figured out was a Christian band after reading some of their lyrics. Some of the songs we heard that night were "I Still Believe" and "Let the Day Begin". I wasn't a Christian at the time, but their music resounded with me nonetheless. Apparently the latter song was used by Al Gore as a campaign song in 2000. I used to sit in my room and listen to their album on an endless loop, along with Psychedelic Furs ("Heaven") and Love and Rockets ("No New Tale to Tell"). The main reason that I began listening to Love and Rockets was the fact that I had a crush on a girl who liked their music. She also managed to get me to listen to The Smiths ("Stop Me").

At any rate, back to the Simple Minds concert. Their most well-known song (probably unarguably) was "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from the incredibly popular "Breakfast Club" soundtrack. I still love hearing this one occasionally. Here's the video:

So, I had this song on my mind today and I was thinking about the lesson I might take from it. What am I doing to make myself memorable to my sphere and clients? I don't want them to forget about me, right? The core of a successful real estate career is repeat and referral business, in my opinion. The majority of my business comes from referrals and past clients, but I know that I could do more.

I would be very interested to hear some ideas about how to make it easier for clients to remember me EVERY time they hear about someone looking to buy or sell a home here in Austin. Are there special techniques that work especially well? Any particular letters you would like to share? Katerina Gasset got me thinking about this subject with her latest featured post. I am looking forward to a phenomenal 2008 for my business, and part of my business plan includes better contact with those who send me business. I want to create a mental "hook" that will make them think of me, without being overly pushy about it.I welcome your feedback.
