Blogging on the Road

Hello all - This is my first attempt at blogging from a hotel room while traveling with my family.  We arrived in San Antonio yesterday for my wife's 20-year high school reunion.  We brought along her sister and her sister's husband to help with childcare while we are here.  We will be here until Sunday afternoon.  I doubt that we will actually leave our kids very long, but there is one event that is only for "grown-ups" Saturday night.  We paid for their hotel room for three days, so this is pricey childcare, but it is worth it.  Who can you really trust with your kids in a different city?  Right?  (Special thanks to Adam Waldman, who mentioned Hotwire.com to me the first time we ever spoke - it saved me a goodly sum of money on the rooms)

Our kids love my wife's sister, and the two older ones actually served as ringbearer and flower girl in her January wedding.  Speaking of January weddings, I had one of those myself almost FIFTEEN years ago.  Yes, my fifteenth wedding anniversary is coming up on January 2nd, 2008.  It truly doesn't seem like it to me.  Time flies when you love your spouse, I suppose.

At any rate, we just got back awhile earlier from the first event, which was at a cool place called Momak's, which is a very casual burger joint with live music and a huge fenced play area for the kids, with a  playground and a real turf football field and plenty of shade.

It was cool getting a chance to see my wife's old friends, some of whom I knew and some of whom I was meeting for the very first time.  There are two more gatherings tomorrow - a picnic and tour of the school itself, and a dressy evening event tomorrow night.  I am frankly exhausted but I thought I would write a little to wind down.  Earlier in the day we took the kids to the San Antonio Museum of Art, which was really very nice (it is a converted old brewery building originally constructed the late 1800's).  I hope to post some of my camera phone photos here on AR when we return to Austin.

The hotel is older and remodeled, and it feels like something from Miami (based on my extremely limited knowledge from "Miami Vice" and that old Will Smith video).  They also have something very cool here called a "dive-in" movie, which is a very large screen and speakers by the pool.  We have a primo view of the movie from the balcony of our room.  Tonight, they showed "Giant" with James Dean, but we got back too late to see it.

Well, I don't have much else for tonight.  Thanks so much for reading!
