Round Rock Restaurant Review - Mimi's Cafe (near Premium Outlets)

Last weekend, my mom was in town, and we decided to head out for lunch.  Since my wife is pregnant, it is sometimes hard to find places that sound appealing to her, but I suggested Mimi's, since she was in a salad and/or sandwich mood.  We had been to the one in Austin a couple of times, and the kids seemed to enjoy the food.

We arrived after "real" lunch time on a Saturday afternoon, probably around 2pm.  My mom went in with our two older kids while I stayed with my wife and helped her unload our sleeping two year old into the stroller.  I told my mom to just go ahead and get a table, since it would take us a couple of minutes.

It was not particularly crowded inside, but they didn't have a table available for us.  They said it would take a couple of minutes to clean one off.  It took about 10-15 minutes instead.  Each time someone new would come to the host stand and ask if we had been helped (manager, three different hostesses).  They didn't have those little pager devices, so we just kind of hung out near the front.  Unfortunately, it was cold enough to hang meat in the waiting area, and my wife actually needed a jacket from the van.  Keep in mind that it was close to 90 degrees outside.  We got a little impatient since we were sort of led to believe that it would be fast (and we had three hungry kids with us), and we were told that it would be a bit longer, since they were "putting silverware on the table".

They did finally seat us, but it took awhile to get our drink order placed.  The waitress was pleasant, although she seemed like she might need a bit more training on the menu, as our basic questions were a slight challenge for her.

My mom had spotted some individually wrapped breads near the entrance, so she inquired about getting some bread for everyone.  They brought us a delicious assortment of breads, including banana bread, zucchini bread (much like gingerbread), and some other tasty choices.  The kids were very pleased.

All of the food was great, although my daughter's hamburger was very greasy, so she ended up not eating that much of it.  The only other small suggestion on the kids' food was the fact that the portion size was very small for my son's mac n' cheese, and they served the fruit with the rind, rather than making it easy for kids to eat.

My wife had the blue cheese and walnut salad with strawberries.  She found it tasty and unique.  I had the crispy parmesan-crusted chicken (which is basically chicken parmesan) and it was great.  My mom had the Cobb salad and seemed pleased.  Both of the salads came with a giant muffin (you choose the flavor).

Overall, the food and value were great, with our tab of about $60 for a family of six (pre-tip), and some food to bring home as well!  It's a new location, so they will likely get some of the service and seating stuff worked out soon enough.  I am not really anxious to return quickly, but if we are in the area we will give it another shot sometime.  I noticed that there was an "area director" (I think that was the title) who was doing his best to oversee the service.

Check it out if you get a chance.  My primary recommendation would be to go when you have ample time to spend on your meal.
