Survivor: Active Rain

I was thinking about Active Rain and its similarities to some of the competitive reality shows that I have seen over the years.  I am not really a fan of "Survivor" by the way - I think I saw the second season, and now they are on season 38 or somewhere in that range.  I just thought that "Survivor: Active Rain" sounded cooler to me than "America's Next Top Blogger" or "Blog Apprentice" or even (God forbid) "Dancing with the Blogs".

Despite the professional nature of Active Rain, there is a lot of fun to be had as well.  I am thankful for the fact that I have been able to develop some fast, and hopefully lasting, friendships during my three and a half month stint in the Rain.

What was I talking about?  Oh yeah.  I was comparing AR to reality television.

Here are my supporting points:

•1.      Alliances - This is something that is readily evident on almost every reality show that I have ever seen.  On TV, if you don't manage to form an alliance with others, you will be left behind.  The same is true on Active Rain.  Build relationships!  That is the point of a network.  If you spend enough time here, you will really begin to care about your online friends.

•2.      Crazy and Funny Personalities - I won't bother to name any names, but there are some quirky bloggers out there.  If you haven't found any, you aren't looking very hard.  I may even be among them.  I write pretty much anything I want to.  No need to wait for inspiration to hit.  I would advise you to do the same.  This is how people get to know the real you.  Trust me on this one.  You may even be surprised when you find some friends that are nothing like you.

•3.      Getting Evicted/Eliminated - I probably don't have to explain this heading when it comes to the TV shows, but I will anyway.  All of the competitive shows have a means for eliminating contestants until an eventual winner is named.  On Active Rain, this is done much less painfully - with the "Unsubscribe" button.  As a matter of fact, I would love to see this button changed to "Evict from my Dashboard".

•4.      Contests and Challenges - On TV you get "immunity" or safety from elimination.  Here on Active Rain, you get points and you might make some new friends along the way.  Incidentally, our Inspired by Song! Group will be announcing a fun new contest on Saturday.  Keep your eyes open for that one.

•5.      Prizes - Unfortunately, Active Rain is not able to provide you with a record contract (yet), a large cash prize, or a job with Donald Trump, but you may attain your own level of celebrity within the network, complete with "fans" of your writing, the chance to make money from referrals, and a private jet.*  You can also vie for the opportunity to become a featured member in your city, county, or even state.  I hope to be in the top spot for Austin by mid-December.  I don't mind stating this publicly.

•6.      The Cool Factor - Just as reality television has been a dominant force on network programming for years, Active Rain is the pre-eminent networking site for true real estate professionals.  Make no mistake - this is the place to be.  I wonder how many spinoffs it will generate?

Thanks for indulging me for a few minutes.  I hope you enjoyed this one.

* Active Rain makes no guarantees as to the ability to award a private jet.  Sorry about that.  It sounded great, though, right?
